De term ‘Developmental Coordination Disorder’ (DCD) of ‘Ontwikkelingsstoornis van de Motorische Coördinatie’ beschrijft kinderen die thuis of op school problemen hebben met taken die motorische vaardigheid vereisen. Het motorische leerproces is verstoord en daarom bewegen deze kinderen onhandig, moeizaam of minder gecoördineerd. De stoornis treedt vaak op in combinatie met andere ontwikkelingsstoornissen, zoals ADHD, dyslexie en autisme. Dit boek wil een wegwijzer zijn voor wie professioneel met deze kinderen in aanraking komt, zoals artsen, verpleegkundigen, psychologen, pedagogen, zorgcoördinatoren in het onderwijs, leerkrachten, logopedisten, ergo- en kinesitherapeuten.

Vanuit een aantal concrete voorbeelden verduidelijken de auteurs de problemen die kinderen met DCD ondervinden. Zij zetten de diagnostische criteria voor DCD uiteen en vertalen ze naar de praktijk. Onderzoek en behandeling komen aan bod, met bijzondere aandacht voor visuo-motorische integratie en schrijfmotorische problemen. De auteurs bespreken de therapeutische mogelijkheden en beperkingen, en schetsen het volledige zorgkader. Het boek bundelt ook praktische tips voor thuis en op school. De onderliggende mechanismen van DCD zijn nog onvoldoende begrepen: dat blijkt uit de samenvatting die de auteurs maken van de huidige stand van het wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar DCD.

About the author

HILDE VAN WAELVELDE werkte jarenlang als kinesitherapeut in het buitengewoon onderwijs. In 2004 promoveerde zij tot Doctor in de Motorische Revalidatie en Kinesitherapie aan de KU Leuven met DCD als onderwerp. Momenteel is zij docent aan de vakgroep Revalidatiewetenschappen en Kinesitherapie van de UGent. Over milde neuromotorische stoornissen bij kinderen staan verschillende nationale en internationale publicaties op haar naam.

BARBARA DE MEY is licentiaat in de Motorische Revalidatie en Kinesitherapie, gespecialiseerd in de behandeling van kinderen. Zij werkte als kinesitherapeut in verschillende instellingen en doceert momenteel als praktijkassistent over revalidatie van kinderen aan de vakgroep Revalidatiewetenschappen en Kinesitherapie van de UGent. In haar zelfstandige praktijk komt zij regelmatig in contact met kinderen met DCD.
